  • John wrote a desperate letter to the Earl of Arundel, begging him to intercede with the Queen on his behalf, but Mary did not spare him.
  • 22ND AUGUST John was first escorted on the day of his execution to St Peter ad Vincula, where he took the Catholic communion and professed that "the plagues that is upon the realm and upon us now is that we have erred from the faith these sixteen years." Then after at 9am taken to his place of Execution.

EXTRA FACTS ON JOHN DUDLEY

  • John Dudley, was the 1st Duke of Northumberland, Earl of Warwick and Viscount Lisle as well as, Lord President of the King Edward VI Council
  • John Lived under five Tudor Monarchs, Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Lady Jane Grey and Mary 1st of England. John did grew-up in the royal courts of England.
  • John’s mother Elizabeth Grey was a niece to Queen consort Elizabeth Woodville, through the Queen’s first marriage to John Grey of Groby.
  • John had two brothers and one half-sister, his sister was from his father’s first marriage. Jerome John’s youngest brother destined for the Church by his father, was mentally or physically incapacitated.
  • John and his wife Jane Guildford had thirteen children. Only seven survived to adult hood. Among these children were Robert Dudley, who was the future known Queen Elizabeth 1st favourite and Guildford Dudley who was the husband of the Lady Jane Grey (Nine day Queen), Ambrose Dudley became the 3rd Earl of Warwick. John had all his children educated in Renaissance humanism and science.
  • Jane Dudley, John’s wife served as a lady-in-waiting to two of Henry VIII of England’s wives, Anne Boleyn, and later to Anne of Cleves
  • In 1534 Edward Guildford, John’s wife’s father died without leaving a will. His only son said it him who should inherit all, however John and his wife contested and went to court on this issue and won the case.
  • It was noted in a French report that John was skilled at wrestling, archery, and the tournaments of the royal court. John was also a military man, he fought in many battles including the Italian wars and in wars of Rough wooing.
  • When Edward Seymour Lord Protector to King Edward VI fell from Grace, John rose further, John replaced Seymour’s role but under the title Lord President of the Council. John also took care of the young Kings Education, trying to prepare him for when he would come into his own governorship when of age.
  • In the Summer of 1553, John’s placed the Lady Jane Grey on the throne, this was the start to a disastrous end to his career. John did not envisage, that the majority of people may feel more strongly for a legitimate catholic monarch who was heir to the throne, than The lady Jane Grey who was in truth, not as close in line but protestant. When news came to him that the privy council had changed sides and supported Mary Tudor, John voluntary gave himself up without a fight. Jane Dudley, John’s wife wrote letters to Queen Mary begging for her husband and sons lives, her pleas for her husband John Fell on deaf ears. John Dudley was executed under Mary 1st of England, for being one of the main leaders in the plot to place the Lady Jane Grey on the English Throne. He abandoned his Protestant faith and turned to Catholicism prior to his execution maybe hoping to be saved from death, which failed. The rest of his family were spared the death sentence apart from Guildford his son.
