EXTRA FACTS ON JOHN NAPIER

  • John Napier was eighth Napier of Merchiston and a Scottish mathematician, physicist and astronomer. He remembered for discovering of logarithms, which is inverse operation to exponentiation, just as division is the inverse of multiplication & vice versa.
 
  • The Napier Family are descended from the ancient Earls of Lennox who were one of the Celtic royal families of Scotland and Ireland. John married twice, to his first wife Elizabeth Stirling he had two children and to his second wife Agnes Chisholm he had ten children.
 
 
  • John also invented the so-called "Napier's bones" and made common the use of the decimal point in arithmetic and mathematics. Napies Bones were used to make calculating easier, The bones were rods, and the rods were used when making large calculations.
 
  • John was also an ardent Protestant and was actively involved in the religious controversies
 
  • John designed several weapons, one such was a burning mirror, which could destroy enemy ships, used for the Spanish Armada in 1588
 
  • John had strong interest in the book of Revelations’ used this to try and predict the Apocalypse, the end of the world .He believed that it would be believed that would occur in 1688 or 1700.
 
 
  • John was also said to have dabbled in the dark arts, and to have carried a spider around in a small box, and that his rooster acted as his familiar. John was a hermit which led to people making their own assumptions on him., of even being a wizard.
 
  • Napier Technical College was founded in 1964, in Edinburgh which was named after John.
 
 
  • Neper old lunar impact crater on the eastern limb of the moon is named after John.
