What are Witch hunters? Who were they and what did they do?

A witch hunt definition is a person who seeks out people who are accused of being witches. Many wrote books supporting their ideas and to convince the public of their methods in determining who was guilty of practising the occult.

  • John was a physician in England and author of books and other texts on medicine and witchcraft

  • He was a scholar of Trinity College, Cambridge, and corpus Christi college.

  • John  wrote extensively about quack doctors and exposed several in his book ignorant practiser of physique, which he wrote in 1612

  • His medical colleague was James Hart from Northampton,

  • John believed in evil spirits, sorcerers and magic. he begins his book during the trial of witchcraft (1616)

  • Matthew claimed to hold the office of witchfinder general,
  • He born in Great Wenham, Suffolk, his father was James Hopkins a clergyman. He had three elder brothers, James, John, and Thomas

  • witch-finding career began in March 1644 and lasted until his retirement in 1647

  • Matthew and his associates were responsible for more people being hanged for witchcraft than in than in any other century

  • He acquired an evil reputation which in later days made his name synonymous with finger man or informer paid by authorities to commit perjury".

  • He wrote a book on magic, he condemns witchcraft, endorsing the witch-trials of his time: "if the witches are not burned, the number of these furies swells up in such an immense sea that no one could live safe from his or her spells and charms."
